From Belgium to the Shores of Amelia Island

Joelle Crahay is a Belgian-born writer who now lives on Amelia Island. Since retiring, she has enjoyed writing children's books inspired by the natural world around her.

Her Teddy the Tortoise series grew out of a lecture on gopher tortoises and the many species that depend on them. This idea of cooperation in nature became the heart of her stories, which gently explore themes of sharing, inclusion, and helping one another.

The island teaches me something new every day — about patience, about nature, about the importance of small moments. I try to share that wonder with the young readers who open my books.

Joelle writes for the joy of storytelling. Her books reflect a love of animals, nature, and the quiet lessons found in everyday moments.

Some of her books are available in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Esperanto, reflecting her belief that stories can be shared simply and across cultures.

About Amelia Island

Amelia Island lies along Florida's northeast coast, where sandy dunes, salt marshes, and maritime forests create a quiet and beautiful natural world.

Among its most important residents is the gopher tortoise, a gentle land animal that digs deep burrows in the sandy soil. These burrows provide shelter for many other species, making the tortoise a vital part of the ecosystem. In Florida, the gopher tortoise is a protected species, and its survival depends on preserving places like Amelia Island.

Along the shoreline, sea turtles return each year to nest, and shorebirds move with the rhythm of the waves. Together, these animals shape the living landscape that inspires Joelle's stories.

When you read her books, you step into this world — feeling the warmth of the sand, the ocean breeze, and the small but meaningful lives of the creatures who call this island home, just as Teddy the tortoise does.
